In order for something to be termed sterling silver, it must be at least 92.5% pure silver.  The piece should also be marked sterling or stamped .925 to indicate that it is sterling silver.

What does 14 Karat Gold mean?  

If a piece of jewelry is 14 Karat Gold, it means that the piece is 14/24 pure gold.  In other words, it is 58.5% pure.  The piece of jewelry should be marked 14KT.  Along with that marking, the manufacturer will stamp a hallmark (insignia) endorsing the piece as 14KT Gold.  Sometimes manufacturers will use the European marking, 585, to indicate that a piece is 14 Karat Gold.

What is the difference between Yellow Gold and White Gold?

The difference in color has to do with the difference in alloys.14 Karat Gold is 14/24 pure gold.  The other 10/24 is another alloy used to strengthen the metal since pure gold is very soft.  In Yellow Gold, the main alloy is silver and in White Gold the main alloy is nickel.  The difference in these alloys changes the color of the end product.You may have also seen rose gold and green gold, whose main alloys are copper and zinc, respectively.
